I hope that Earl will be able to display the location of other nearby Earl devices and even better would be the ability to interact with Rino devices from Garmin in this regard. This would be useful for families and friends outdoors together and as an aid in locating someone that is lost.
Not sure Garmin's RINO protocol is open. It could probably be reverse engineered, but Garmin most likely has some sort of patent protection. I'll research it when I get some free time.

Yes, if we can get an APRS app on the device, it should be able to do this on the normal amateur radio aprs frequency.
I Agree APRS on 144.39 would be awesome. But transceiving Garmin RINO in addition to APRS, would be even better especially if you can do both, and translate RINO and APRS packets onto the other "network". That would make EARL indispensable for SAR.
