I'm not a close personal friend of Jon. I twisted his arm into stopping by my hometown to show me what he had. I invited him to lunch as further incentive. I also convinced him to do an impromptu video, and as you can tell by the first part of the video, he wasn't completely comfortable with that. I saw, held and goofed with the prototype Jon had. I had about a total of an hour and a half with him.
This was the first time I met Jon.
During the first part of the Earl pre-sales, I got into it, and was very excited, even about the gray-scale screen as I knew that power conservation was of primary importance. At the time of concept, there were no low-power color e-ink screens available at a reasonable price (maybe 2 on the market and priced too high to be considered for the Earl tablet).
If you didn't want the gray-scale screen, why did you pre-order/back this?
I'm an early backer. I asked if he needed help on the first Q&A that was on the main page of meetearl.com. I saw the same questions asked over and over, and basically it was a bunch of people being anonymous, asking questions that had been answered, had they only ready a little bit of the backlog. I kinda stepped up with a suitable pseudonym - of 'Not Earl 2'. After about two months of answering questions that had been answered before, sometimes sarcastically, Jon asked if I'd be willing to be a moderator on the new forum they were creating. I jumped at the chance, as talking about the Earl was exciting. Jon had some lifetime friends who started to help, but then bailed on him. PMR and I are the only two mods that are still helping, and I'm betting Rick never has met Jon.
I had made a spreadsheet that contained all of the questions that had been asked, as well as the official answers that were given. This helped me to be more useful as a mod. This kept me involved as a Earl Hopeful.
Yes, I got notice that you wanted to piggyback your video on mine. I reviewed your video and determined that you really do want to go through in your 'copious quantities of spare time' and edit it to make it more of what you called, 'In a nutshell'. I'm not going to go out and troll your video with comments, because that's your site, your video and your opinion.
You do make some assumptions, including how I know Jon, which are unfounded and seemingly constructed from a great imagination. Kudos on your great imagination dude.
I can say that I haven't heard from Jon in a while, but I know that he's trying to get face-time with Netronix and convince them that the remaining, dwindling funds make it worth their time to help him develop it.
It is a scam? Fraud? I know it wasn't intended to be. Jon has spent over a year living in a hostel in China, trying to rally support for his idea, trying to get companies to help. He's used his own frequent flyer miles to get back and forth, go to Dublin, etc. Onyx took a long time to develop the product I got to see, but the radio that they offered up was junk. Once Jon tried to advocate for getting it done right, they determined they didn't have the manufacturing capacity to handle it, and sent him looking for another manufacturer. Netronix is right-sized for the project, but Jon is low on cash now that over half of the backers asked for refunds.
Rock and a hard place. Jon hasn't had a career or health insurance for a couple of years now.
You've made your video, posted your topic, and let everyone know how you feel. I won't censor you unless you swear or threaten anyone. This is a family-friendly forum, and I intend to help keep it that way. Thanks for your post.
I'm really hoping that you do get your refund.
