Notifications are a modern must.
What about two customizable home screens: 1) daily use 2)back-country. @mweiss suggested something like Chameleon Launcher. That particular launcher has customizable home screens for Morning - Work - Evening able to be set to appear at designated times. Earl needs something for daily use, and something for the back country.
Notifications are great. But, for example:
On a daily basis in the office/home/car - some sort of native weather forecast from the on-board sensors will not be very useful. It would be better to have a weather app.
In the back-country while hiking, a weather forecast notification from the on-board sensors would be fantastic. Sure, I will want current temperature and humidity and wind speed - the whole nine yards.
But in both cases, I will want some sort of battery level indicator.
Not useful in the back-country: social media, on-line tethered weather apps, news, instagram
Not useful in the office: on-board sensors, GRMS radio,
Useful in both: clock, battery meter, quick access to switches, calendar (maybe), music.
At least for some sort of live update-able notification home screen.
