I rarely post to forums. Too many "trolls" to get excited about. Some people have way too much free time on their hands when this is where they must invest so much energy. But I have followed the posts and discussions from this forum over the past 7 months or so and decided my 2 cents is worth someone's time. Some of the members of this forum should hear it.
I backed two "kick start" gadgets at relatively the same time. While I was hopeful that the expected time frame was accurate, I am world savvy enough to know that life, regulations, limitations, bureaucracy etc, gets in the way. The other gadget made no promise about updates, did not provide a forum, did not meet the original ship date nor did they promise updates and information. This from a company whose original member had a TedTalk about the need for such a device. And although I spent some money, as long as there had been occasional (1 update per 4-5 months) letting me know my investment wasn't washed out (yet) I only need to know that project is moving along and that I will still get the gadget at the end. Or that the roadblocks were greater than originally perceived and the project went belly up(hasn't happened yet!)
I knew going in that this was an investment: investments are risks you take. Anyone thinking this was Internet shopping was mistaken.
The only wrong I see here is promising updates (more than once) And perhaps providing a place for complaints to fester amongst a community.
If I get an Earl, I will ecstatic. If not? Someone will create something similar from this research and idea. Maybe learn from the mistakes and misfortunes of the Earl.
Make a product that is solar rechargeable, has great maps, tempurature gauge, compass, gps, altimeter, radio capabilities, (Other options I'm missing?) and that will be a promise delivered. If not, I chalk it up to research and development I am proud to have supported.
