I think the lack of interest in the radios is due to the fact, its a jack of all trades.
When it comes to my radio equipment, I am not going to trust my life with something that can crash because it doesn't like the ereader I have. That it is able to do radio communication is awesome and it allows murs so you can send gps data over radio is better.
But its a feature not a must have. The less complex a device is, the more stable and dependable the device becomes. It will be handy as a spare radio setup to listen to emergency frequencies for each trail, saving the battery for my main radio for when I really do need it.
Anyways thats how I see the radio situation. If you want to play with radios that are programmable with interchangeable antennas. A cheap $30 baofeng would be my choice rather than the earl.
Color E-ink is a major want. It will be awesome for my comic book viewing better for my terrain maps.
